(SitNews) - Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) is accepting applications for the 2011-2012 school year and for the first time, students will be able to complete and submit applications and required documents entirely online. A new system founded by the institute eliminates the burden of paperwork for students and staff, said SHI President Rosita Worl, noting the new system is a lot more convenient.

“It takes less than 30 minutes to fill out and submit. Plus, students can track their funds, maintain contact information and get instant verification when their application is received,” Worl said.

Scholarship awards will be made to Sealaska shareholders and descendants enrolled in accredited colleges, universities and voc-tech schools. The scholarships are awarded to roughly 400 students per year.

The scholarship funds awarded are provided by Sealaska Corporation from an endowment and corporate 7 (i) sharing provisions established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). The Section 7(i) Agreement among the regional corporations provides scholarships to students seeking degrees in disciplines that lead to employment in Sealaska or its subsidiaries.

The fund will be supplemented this year by a $5,000 donation from AT&T, Worl said.

“This gift will enable more Alaska Native students to reach their educational goals,” Worl said.

SHI is a Native nonprofit established in 1980 to administer educational and cultural programs for Sealaska, a regional Native corporation formed under ANCSA. The institute’s mission is to perpetuate and enhance Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian cultures.

The application is available at www.sealaskaheritage.org. The deadline is March 1, 2011.
