National Mentoring Month
By Joann Flora

January is National Mentoring Month. This is a great time to look around and assess the needs for youth mentoring in our community. Kids need an average of five positive adult role models while they are growing up if they are to be prepared for adulthood.

In Ketchikan, we have many children who would benefit from the friendship of a caring adult. Kids need good examples to follow and people who will take the time to listen to them. You can mentor a youth by giving a few hours a month to one of several youth organizations or by volunteering at a school. And, if you are the parent or guardian of a child, this is a great time to enroll them in a mentoring agency. Our kids are worth whatever it takes, and it takes becoming involved. Get involved today!
