Ketchikan, Alaska - Black bears frequent the Herring Cove and Herring Bay area south of Ketchikan and are frequently sighted as they go about feeding on salmon traveling to the hatchery.

In general, all bears should be considered as potentially dangerous and should be treated with respect. Give bears plenty of room, don't crowd them. According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, "When photographing bears, use long lenses; getting close for a great shot could put you inside the danger zone."
