Fire crews searched the building for the cause of the alarm and found a mattress smoldering in one of Hometown's showrooms. The cause of the fire was a portable lamp used to illuminate displays. The mattress was removed and extinguished by Ketchikan Fire Department crews and caused no other damage to the business or any other items in the store.

According to the Ketchikan Fire Department, this only shows the importance of smoke alarms and fire detection systems. Quoting a news release from the Ketchikan Fire Department, "if this fire would have gone undetected due to the fact that the side of the building where this occurred is not sprinkled, the fire could have been devastating to the business owners, the City of Ketchikan, and the residents who also live in the building."

For information regarding fire prevention activities or smoke alarms, contact Assistant Chief Jim Hill at the Ketchikan Fire Department.
