Ketchikan, Alaska - This week in Ketchikan there will be auditions for The Fish Pirate's Daughter. Come join the cast of The Fish Pirates Daughter, a First City Players production, now in its 40th year of running. An original Ketchikan melodrama. Roles available for both men and women. Auditions are being held at the First Lutheran Church on Tues., May 23rd and Thurs. May 25th beginning at 6:30pm. Call the First City Players at 225-4792 for more information.

The Rubber Band performs their farewell performance on the Kayhi stage, Friday May 26. This local teenage band takes the stage at 7pm, doors at 6:30. Admission is free, donations gladly accepted. CDs on sale as well. Call 225-9815 for info.

Workshops & Classes:

ArtsCool Summer Theatre and Dance Camp: First City Players and Ketchikan Theatre Ballet are now accepting registrations for this summer's camp. Running July 17- August 11, with camp shows on August 11 and 12. For ages 8-16, including a movement and advanced movement/theatre camp in the mornings and an afternoon theatre camp performing Disney's Aladdin, Jr. Call 225-4792 or 225-9311 or visit www.ketchikanarts.org for more info.

Plein Air Workshop in Juneau hosted by the painting group Plein Rein, a group focusing on plein air works in all types of visual media. Visiting artist Larry Seiler will be teaching the second annual summer plein air painting workshop on July 8-12, 2006 and July 14 - 16. Sitka Fine Art Camp 2006 is accepting registrations for this year's camp. Join Middle School and High School students from around Alaska and the lower 48 in an exciting creative experience. Classes range from drawing and painting, to film animation and photography, to hip-hop dance and musical workshops. Middle School sessions run June 18 - July 1: High School from July 2 - July 16. The 22nd Sitka Symposium featuring talks, readings and workshops, is titled Radical Compassion: Across the Great Divides, and runs July 16 -- 22, 2006. Symposium leaders for this year are Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, Rabia Terri Harris, Micheline Aharonian Marcom, Soto Zen Priest Alan Senauke and Sandy Tolan. Full Registration and options, and partial attendance are available for enrollment. A nonrefundable deposit will hold your place in the full Symposium, balance of fees due June 15, 2006. Opening reception for Ketchikan artist Beth Antonsen and friends on Friday June 2nd from 5-7pm at the Mainstay Gallery. No Artist is an Island features various styles, media and artists. Haida Descendant Dancers perform at Totem Bight on every second Friday of the month through September. The next performance will be Friday, June 9th at 6:30. Come see the Haida Descendant Dancers dance in traditional regalia while singing songs, telling stories, and drumming. Performances begin at 6:30 in the Totem Bight Clan House. Singer/Songwriter/Producer Sara Hickman performs in Ketchikan, June 30th at the Kayhi auditorium. Sara Hickman is an award winning singer/songwriter with a wide range of guitar and vocal music. Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing on June 23rd, 24th, 30th and July 1st at Point Higgins Elementary School will take you back to a Shakespeare Summer with a festival feel. Rain or shine, this production will go on, in case of inclement weather dress appropriately and bring a seat. Summer weather is not guaranteed, but a good time is. Our Town: The Life and Times of Ketchikan, the museum's annual summer display, on now through September 30th at the Tongass Historical Museum, 629 Dock Street.

Drop-In Chess for kids at the Library goes from 4-5pm every Wednesday. Drop-in anytime to learn from scratch or fine tune your skills. Call the Library for more info, 225-0370.

Story time at the Library continues regularly throughout the year on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 10:30am. After some playtime, the librarian reads stories, sings songs, does finger plays and shows a short film beginning around 10:40 am. This program is appropriate for infants through pre-school age children.

The Sitka Music Festival is celebrating 35 years of music. This year's festival will be held June 2 - 23rd. Eight evening concerts, free brown bag concerts and a boat party concert are just a few activities for this year's event. Gigglefeet grant applications are available from the Arts Council at 716 Totem Way. This is for access grants to help dancers and choreographers obtain funds for costume design and materials, set design, lighting, music and babysitting for Gigglefeet 2006. Deadline for applications is Friday, June 16th, 2006 at 5pm to the Arts Council. Deadline for dance pieces is July 21st. Registration forms due at the First City Players. Calling all artists to submit proposals for the Fawn Mountain Percent For Art project. Proposals are due Wednesday, June 28th by 5pm to the Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council, 716 Totem Way. Blueberry Arts Festival booth registration: The Blueberry Arts Festival will be held August 5th at the State building in downtown. 2005 festival booth holders have until June 16th to reclaim their booths or request a change. New booth holder registration begins at 10 am on June 21st and ends July 21st or until space runs out. Call for Bands: Calling all bands interested in the Battle of the Bands competition and show on August 5th at the Blueberry Arts Festival. Cash prizes available, call the arts council for more information, 225-2211. Please register by July 26th, space is limited.

Volunteer for the Southeast Alaska State Fair needed in Ketchikan. The SE AK State Fair will be happening July 27-30 in Haines, Alaska. A volunteer is needed in Ketchikan to put up posters and be a contact person for Ketchikan area residents. All of Southeast Alaska can and should be represented at the fair, and you can help Ketchikan be a strong part. Call Frances Field at (907) 766-2476 for more information and/or to volunteer. Inside Passages, Ketchikan's literary magazine, is entering its seventeenth year of publication. Editors are looking for poems (100 lines, maximum), short stories and essays (up to 2500 words), and artwork suitable for grayscale reproduction. Please submit your work in the body of an email message (to info@ketchikanarts.org) or on a CD. Hard copies mailed in will be accepted as well. Publication will be in November. Those selected for publication will receive one copy of Inside Passages. Additional volumes available to participants at a discount. Inside Passages is published annually by the Writers Forum, which is a program of the Arts Council. Requirements: Please include your name, address, phone number, title(s) of your work, and a 4-line biography in submissions. The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council Board of Directors meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6pm at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way.

Rainy Day Quilters meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month, at 6:45pm, at Holy Name.
