Lt. Jerry Kiffer, Program Manager for the North Tongass Fire Department 's (NTFD) Emergency Medical Services, said since February 1, 2004, the NTFD officially began providing the North Tongass service area residents with fire and ambulance services. Kiffer said since the 1st of February, they have responded to three fire calls and six medical calls.

The North Tongass Fire Department is now operating out of two locations - the leased buidling at Ward Cove and a leased building at 12.5 miles North Tongass. Kiffer said the plan is to construct a permanent fire station across the street from its leased building at Mile 12.5. This new building is expected to be completed by November 2004.

The NTFD has added a new ambulance and a new fire engine at its Ward Cove location and currently has one fire engine and one water tanker at the Mile 12.5 North Tongass location.

The department expects to receive two more water tankers by the end of May. Presently, Lt. Kiffer said they have 21 volunteer fire fighters who are qualified as Emergency Medical Technicians, with 7 also qualified for Emergency Medical Services.
