The forums will showcase and preserve the knowledge of cultural teachers and elders from three local native tribes: Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian.
UAS Ketchikan Professor of Anthropology and Sociology Priscilla Schulte was awarded a grant from the University of Alaska Foundation for the purpose of sponsoring the forums for the community.
Each week, different cultural teachers from local Native tribes will share stories and language with the public. The forums will also feature recorded stories from special campus collections including a recently converted collection of Haida stories and interviews and the Beynon Papers, a large collection of Tsimshian stories. These stories will be enhanced by the interpretation of the cultural teachers present at the forums.
With assistance from the Ketchikan Indian Community and the Alaska Native Sisterhood, Camp 14, the forums offer the public an opportunity to hear from SE Alaska Native cultural teachers. The forums are free and open to the public.
