Marijuana Legalization Initiative Certified

January 07, 2004
Wednesday - 12:40 am

Lieutenant Governor Loren Leman on Tuesday notified sponsors of the initiative petition 01MRNA, "An Act to Decriminalize and Regulate Cannabis (Hemp Including Marijuana)" that their initiative has been certified for placement on the November 2, 2004 General Election ballot.

The Lieutenant Governor originally denied certification of the petition in January 2003 because of a lack of qualified signatures. One hundred ninety-four signature booklets could not be verified by the Division of Elections because of reporting deficiencies. Gathering and receipt of the signatures took place under former Lieutenant Governor, Fran Ulmer, Leman's predecessor. On September 23, 2003, Anchorage Superior Court Judge John Suddock ordered that 168 of the booklets be counted anyway, despite the reporting deficiencies. Sponsors were notified on November 13th that under the Court order their petition had the required 28,783 signatures to qualify for the ballot.
